Vice Chancellor and Chief Digital Officer Tom Andriola talks with key stakeholders of Compass, UC Irvine’s data-driven student success program. Together they look back on the past year, discuss the challenges, wins and progress they’ve made in continuing to expand Compass across campus, and the future direction of UCI’s ambitious Student Success 3.0 vision.

ALOHA: Inside a UCI Mathematics Professor's Effort to Maximize Hybrid Learning

Currently hosted every Wednesday, these sessions were created by Lehman in response to a need for students to interact with one another and the instructor. The in-person sessions accompany the large, lecture-based online math courses, which traditionally limit faculty-student guidance, peer-to-peer interaction and decrease motivation for many students. Each week, students work together to complete a set of math problems by the end of the hour and peer mentors can be spotted zigzagging from table to table to assist students and promote a positive learning environment.

Second Annual Waypoints Symposium Continues Important Progress Toward Data-Driven Student Success

From March 25-26, UC Irvine hosted the second annual Waypoints Symposium, a conference featuring speakers and interactive sessions exploring how to best leverage student data in guiding educational policy to ensure student success. Across this two-day stretch, over 110 thought leaders and stakeholders from 27 universities and other institutions across the country gathered in our Anteater Learning Pavilion to discuss emerging opportunities and challenges in using data to drive student success in higher education.

UCI Launches Data Literacy Tools: Compass MAPSS and Data GPS

As part of the University’s commitment to data-driven student success, UC Irvine is launching the Compass MAPSS certification program: a series of data analytics courses for campus faculty and staff. Aimed at promoting data literacy , the program, which is officially titled UCI Metrics & Analytics Promoting Student Success, consists of online and in-person courses ranging from data visualization and ethics to using data in team decision making.

Reframing Academic Probation: UCI’s Move Toward Recovery

“The main goal of the Academic Recovery initiative is to empower students and help them feel in control of their academic performance,” said Michael Dennin, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning. “The Academic Recovery initiative represents a fantastic example of the campus coming together and utilizing data and analytics to make a meaningful difference in university structures.”

UCI has joined Unizin, a consortium of leading academic and research institutions committed to optimizing digital transformation in higher education. As a member, UCI has access to knowledge sharing and analytics tools to elevate its data-informed student success initiative, UCI Compass. This collaboration comes at a critical time when UCI is ramping up efforts to more effectively utilize digital intelligence and data to improve educational equity.

Introducing the UCI Postsecondary Education Research & Implementation Institute (PERI²)

In 2022, the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (OVPTL) and Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), announced the creation of the Postsecondary Education Research & Implementation Institute (PERI²). PERI² represents an interdisciplinary team of campus leaders dedicated to supporting and conducting research centered around equitable student access and applying the findings to college and university settings.
